We deeply admire companies like Costco that take care of their customers and employees. As Sol Price, founder of Price Club, once pointed out, there is a fiduciary relationship between a company and its customers, and a company should treat its customers very fairly and with honesty. In the long term, business owners will get rewarded when customers and employees are prioritized and suppliers/vendors are treated fairly. This philosophy resonates with our personal belief and guides us in our business dealings. We seek to acquire a company built on these same values and carry the torch forward.
"Ben Graham taught me 45 years ago that in investing it is not necessary to do extraordinary things to get extraordinary results. In later life, I have been surprised to find that this statement holds true in business management as well. What a manager must do is handle the basics well and not get diverted."
We are a married couple living in the New York metro area with four lovely young children, two boys and two girls. We are both first-generation immigrants who grew up in families with little means, and came to cherish the American dream. We were both math majors in college, and remain intellectually curious across a wide range of interests. We both love business and entrepreneurship and believe that business plays a highly positive role in the world.
Alongside raising young children, we stay active and inspired through tennis, travel, reading and interior design.
Ray grew up in Brooklyn after his family moved from Syria when he was five. After college at MIT, he went to medical school at Columbia University and trained to become a psychiatrist. After a few years of solo private practice, Ray co-founded Rivia Mind in 2017 with another psychiatrist. Both Ray and his co-founder were first-time entrepreneurs with little prior business experience. With a lot of trial and error, they fine-tuned their service for the right market fit and built their first stable team. Over the years, they learned to set up a scalable infrastructure and delegate decision-making to leadership teams. Most importantly, as the CEO, Ray learned the importance and power of setting up and reinforcing the right culture and values. They grew the company organically and without external capital, all the while maintaining their clinical integrity and quality. Today, Rivia is a mid-sized mental health company serving thousands of patients across multiple states. It remains physician-owned and focused on its original goal: high-quality mental health care that’s affordable.
Ralph grew up in China and came to the US for his PhD in Engineering at Georgia Tech. Afterwards, he pursued a career in quantitative finance, where he studied stock mispricing and built systematic trading strategies. Following his finance career, he led a complex, two-year gut renovation of a historic home—managing architects, general contractors, and trade specialists through every phase of design, budgeting, bidding, procurement, and on-site supervision. He also designed and built the weekly analytics system that Rivia's leadership used for five years to run the business—tracking provider productivity, patient retention, collections, and new-patient referral sources to guide payroll, marketing, and strategic decisions. Alongside raising four young children, Ralph has dedicated his time to studying great investors, particularly Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, and analyzing public enterprises. Through this, he has come to appreciate what makes a business last: loyal customers, sound economics, and a culture people are proud of.
